Foam Facts

Are you trying to control noise inside a space or noise escaping from a space?
It matters! You can treat the noise at the source, or prevent the noise from traveling to other areas. Our foam experts can help identify the options.

What kind of noise are you trying to control?

Are you trying to attenuate background noise, machine noise, high- or low-frequency noise? Every kind of noise demands a different solution. Our foam product specifications can help identify the options.

Are aesthetics important to your application?

We have fabricated aesthetically pleasing solutions for the most demanding environments. Foam can be symmetrically fabricated, and painted or covered with fabric to create a multitude of appearances.

How important is fire rating to your application?

Fire rating is very important for some applications. It’s important to know whether your application is included in building code regulations that requires fire-rated materials.

What is a sabin?
A sabin is a unit of acoustic sound absorption. One square meter of a 100% absorbing material has a value of 1 sabin.

What is an NRC?
A single number rating, which is the average of the sound absorption coefficients in the octave bands centered at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz.

What is the best way to install ceiling tiles?
If you have purchased foam attached to backer boards, simply drop the tiles in place in the ceiling tile grid. If you are gluing foam tiles directly to the ceiling, make sure both surfaces are clean and dust free. Apply .25” bead of glue 1” from outer edges around the entire perimeter. Then apply a bead of glue diagonally from corner to corner to make and X in the center of the foam tile. Gently press foam tile into place for 5-10 seconds. Carefully pull foam tile away and allow glue to get tacky (45-60 seconds). Press foam tile back into position and hold; checking your pattern for positioning before glue takes a permanent set.

What is the best way to install acoustical panels?
If you are gluing foam tiles directly to the ceiling or walls, make sure both surfaces are clean and dust free.

What is the best way to install an acoustical baffle?
Hang either horizontal (standard) or vertical (special order) with built in straps using a 1/16” cable or lightweight chain. Loop chain/cable around joist/truss/eye bolts. Run the chain/cable directly through grommet in baffle strap and secure ends together.  Check baffle to make sure its level and lined up with other baffles.

What is UL94HF-1?
A flammability standard released by Underwriters Laboratories of the USA.

Summary of Materials

Polyethylene foam

Polyethylene foam is a durable, lightweight, resilient, closed-cell material, available in a wide range of densities and colors. It is often used for packaging heavier items and for material handling applications due to its excellent vibreation-dampening and insulation properties, as well as its high resistance to chemicals and moisture.

Crosslinked polyethylene foam

Crosslinked polyethylene foam is a high-density closed-cell foam characterized by a compact feel and resistance to water. It has many of the same properties as polyethylene foam but also has the ability to protect delicate surfaces and is consequently used extensively in the packaging of medical products and equipment.

Polyurethane foams

Polyurethane foam is a very popular variety of foam materials used in many applications. For packaging applications, this open-celled foam is typically used to protect lighter-weight, delicate objects with high fragility and/or lower drop-height maximums. It comes in a range of densities and colors.

Reticulated polyurethane foams/filter foam

Reticulated polyurethane foam is a versatile material typically used to make products that are involved in filtration, absorption, wiping, and padding. Common applications include cosmetic applicators, speaker grilles, air conditioner filters, and sponges—but its high resistance to chemicals also makes it ideal for a host of industrial filtering and wiping applications.

Neoprene/EPDM

Neoprene/EPDM is a flexible and durable material that provides good thermal and moisture insulation and form fitting that is able to resist ozone, sunlight, oxidation, as well as many petroleum derivatives and chemicals. Neoprene foam can also resist breakdown by water. Some of the many uses of neoprene include rollers, filters, and sealing materials.

Melamine

Melamine is a sound-absorbing foam with fire-resistant properties. It is also used for vibration dampening.

Other Materials

We fabricate many other materials including: unusual foams, films, fabrics, adhesives, vinyl, plastics, and cork.
